Preparing for a Move as an Adult with ASD

Moving from one home to another remains a stressful and disruptive event for many people, especially for adults on the autism spectrum. Adults on the spectrum experience more sensitivity to shifts that affect their sense of order, routine, and surroundings. However, they can take some steps to make it easier.

Adults can start by clearly labeling boxes, noting their destination, and outlining their contents. This strategy helps them avoid frustration or anxiety while digging through belongings in search of a specific item.

Then, pack one piece of luggage with items they'll need during the first week after the move. Packing enough clothing, toiletries, towels, toilet paper, and easy-to-prepare food readily at hand helps alleviate worry.

Lastly, prepare a schedule that accommodates calls and visits by contractors, real estate agents, movers, and cleaners. To have a set game plan from the start, it makes sense to write out pertinent information and instructions for each person involved in the move.
